Do You Make the Mistake of Not Understanding the Game?
Today's professional and executive women recognize that the corporate world still languishes far behind where most would like it to be. Unfortunately, the subtleties of the Old Boys Club are alive and well in corporate America.
Most women have heard big business described as a Game but there are still those who really don’t want to believe it is so. At least they don’t believe it until they experience the subtleties at play. Perhaps they are not copied on important memos, colleagues cut them off in mid-sentence, or others try to take credit for their ideas. These women also notice that they are routinely left out of casual social gatherings or they are not given the type of assignments that will heighten their profile.
You know you are skilled, even brighter than average. You work hard, you stay late and yet others who are less dedicated get recognized and rewarded. It is sad but true that it will be exceptionally difficult to move ahead if you don’t appreciate the invisible rules of the game.
Women simply must demonstrate a broader range of business skills to meet the higher standards to which they are held. To succeed in an environment designed by men they need to demonstrate a keener sense of how their actions affect others.
This is why executive coaching is hot. For women the story is similar – they don’t know what they don’t know. And, lacking a suitable tutor most women will misjudge the players, or worse yet shoot themselves in the foot only to find they are sidelined or removed from the team permanently.
As in any sport, rules are important. You may be able to guess some of them but you’ll never guess them all. You need to play by the rules, understand what is considered a win, and be viewed as a strong team player.
Here’s how to tell if it would be helpful to learn the rules.
You've likely heard comments such as:
- You’re not ready for promotion
- You don’t really understand risk and reward
- You’re not really focused
- It's important to get the work out the door
- You need to be able to establish priorities
- Your emotions need to be held in check
- You don’t delegate effectively
- You take feedback as criticism
- You avoid confrontation
If you have an hour every couple of weeks, then we guarantee to work a miracle in your life.
A female mentor is generally preferable to help you maneuver through the office morasses because she had to get through them herself.
You CAN learn the rules that regulate the Game. However, coaching is not for the faint of heart. It takes time and at least a six-month commitment to meeting every other week.
Are you up to it? Are you determined to burst on to the scene as a strong, effective player?
We can help you navigate your way through the maze. Our executive coaching also includes mentoring, skill development and teaching.
We’ll focus on three specific areas:
- The big picture and how your role ties into the organizational goals and objectives
- The day-to-day business where we help you address specific issues and concerns
- How your personal goals, your personality, and work/life balance tie into your career aspirations
